Help needed to protect Housing Support Grant
ClwydAlyn fully supports Cymorth Cymru and Community Housing Cymru's Housing Matters campaign that calls on the Welsh Government to publish a budget that supports our shared ambition to end homelessness in Wales.
We’re aware that Welsh Ministers have committed to ending homelessness in Wales, but this needs to be reflected in their 2022/23 budget decisions if this ambition is to become a reality.
The Housing Support Grant has been a vital sources of funding for homeless services, enabling ClwydAlyn's teams to provide essential support to those in need. One case study, ‘Applicant A’, which highlights this is of one individual who was homeless and was referred for housing support.
‘Applicant A’ had travelled the world when he was younger having joined the army, experiencing things only many of us dream of. A serious accident turned his life upside down overnight. Having lost most of his independence due to the accident and losing his short-term memory, Applicant A found himself homeless, and sleeping in a shed for over a year.
ClwydAlyn’s Tenancy Support team were able to help Applicant A, providing him with housing related support, helping him with his utilities, assisting him with grant applications for furniture and supporting with various additional referrals. All of which ensured Applicant A had the correct support in place.
This is an essential service and Applicant A is only one of many examples of how this initiative has helped people to get back on their feet and live independently again.
Our values are Hope, Trust and Kindness and we include this in all that we do. As the Welsh Government prepares its draft budget and Senedd Committees begin their scrutiny, it is crucial that we all come together and make sure that the Welsh Government supports this campaign.
